Posted: 3:26 pm PDT March 27, 2009Updated: 3:34 pm PDT March 27, 2009

Authorities are searching today for an armed suspect who allegedly robbed a bank this morning in San Anselmo.

The robbery occurred at about 9:35 a.m. at a Tamalpais Bank at 100 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in San Anselmo, San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.

About five minutes after the robbery, a San Rafael police officer spotted the suspect on a motorcycle and pursued him.

The suspect eventually ditched his motorcycle and fled on foot, according to Rohrbacher, who said police have gotten several calls of sightings of the suspect but have not been able to locate him.

The suspect is described as a white man who is between 18 and 25 years old with mid-length brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and black jeans, and was barefoot after losing his shoes while fleeing officers.

The search caused a temporary lockdown of two schools near where the suspect was last seen.

He was last seen on Southern Heights Boulevard, which is next to Laurel Dell Elementary School and Davidson Middle School on Woodland Avenue, Rohrbacher said. The schools were temporarily placed on lockdown as a precaution during the search.

About 40 law enforcement officers from throughout Marin County were involved in the search, she said.

Anyone with information about the robbery should contact San Anselmo police at (415) 258-4610, and anyone that sees the suspect should call 911 or local police.

She said the suspect displayed a handgun during the robbery and should be considered armed and dangerous.
