SAN FRANCISCO -- An Oakland man shot by San Francisco police Friday night in the city's Excelsior District with six felonies, including assault with a firearm on an officer. Reginald Battle, 19, was shot by officers three times in the leg around midnight near Mission Street and Geneva Avenue. Police have released few details about that shooting and an earlier shooting nearby in which two other men were wounded. Both shootings happened after a nearby hip-hop concert was shut down due to crowd rowdiness. At the time Battle was shot, a large crowd had gathered at the intersection of Mission Street and Geneva Avenue. Battle was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was treated and later arrested. Prosecutors have additionally charged Battle with discharging a firearm, exhibiting a firearm in the presence of an officer, illegal carrying of a loaded firearm by a felon, illegal possession of a firearm by a felon, and illegal carrying of a concealed weapon by a felon. The hip-hop concert had been held at the Sons of Italy hall located at 5051 Mission St. The concert was brought to a close early, at about 11 p.m., after the building manager said she felt the event was becoming dangerously overcrowded and the crowd was not obeying instructions. One person had earlier been ejected from the venue because of a fight. Police have not concluded the shootings were definitely connected to the concert, but the first shooting happened about a block away from the concert hall roughly 20 minutes after the concert was shut down. In that shooting, one male victim was found shot in the parking lot of a Safeway, and another closer to the street, according to police. The officer-involved shooting happened about 30 to 40 minutes later. The officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave during the investigation. Police and the district attorney's office conduct separate investigations into officer-involved shootings as standard procedure. Neither agency has been willing to discuss their investigations publicly. Police said there may have been dozens of witnesses to the shootings, and asked anyone with information to call the either the police department's homicide unit, which handles officer-involved shootings, at (415) 553-1145, or the anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444.
