BERKELEY, Calif. -- A 21-year-old Berkeley man has been charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon for the death of his 5-month-old son, Berkeley police said Wednesday. Lamar Franklin was arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court on Tuesday and was scheduled to return to court Wednesday to enter a plea, authorities said. Berkeley police spokesman Andrew Frankel said police received a 911 call around 4:40 p.m. on Friday about a choking infant in the 1300 block of Ward Street. Responding officers helped Franklin perform CPR on the infant and paramedics transported him to Children's Hospital in Oakland. The boy died at the hospital on Tuesday, Frankel said. He said Franklin initially was arrested on suspicion of child abuse but the charges against him were upgraded after the boy died. Frankel said the boy's death is Berkeley's fourth homicide this year.
