SAN FRANCISCO -- An apartment fire in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley neighborhood late Saturday night sent eight people to the hospital, including one firefighter and three children, authorities said.

The blaze was reported at 11:13 p.m. Saturday at 2420 Bayshore Boulevard, according to the fire department. The fire was under control at about 11:45 p.m.

A firefighter was hospitalized after sustaining trauma while fighting the blaze, The fire also hospitalized seven other people, including three children, according to the department.

A police officer was also treated for smoke inhalation and released at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
