One Escapee From Minimum-Security Facility Arrested

Prison authorities have arrested one of two women who walked away from a minimum-security prison program in Oakland Tuesday night.

The women, 27-year-old Stephanie Almeida, and 30-year-old Katrice Davis, along with Davis' 4-year-old daughter, were reported missing around 7 p.m. from Oakland's Community Prisoner Mother Program facility, according to spokeswoman Terry Thornton.

The facility, called the Project Pride Center, houses low-level offenders while they raise their children. The facility in Oakland houses 24 inmates and is one of three such programs in California, Thornton said. A total of 71 female inmates are in the program statewide.

The program allows children under 6 years old to live with their mothers while the mothers are incarcerated. Pregnant women may also partake in the program, give birth at the facility and keep their babies.

Most women housed at the facility are addicted to drugs, according to Thornton. The program offers substance abuse treatment and believes that allowing the mothers and children to live together is better for all involved.

Officials said Almeida called her program counselor from a San Jose mall. That was where prison authorities said they picked Alemeida up Wednesday evening.

Davis remains at large with her four-year-old daughter Amyre. Both women could be sent back to state prison.

"Ultimately, after law enforcement does its job, she's going to be separated from that child again," said Project Pride division director Luther Jessie. "And who knows what kind of lasting scars that's gonna have on that child?"

Prison officials do not believe the little girl is in danger.
