Kaboom; Nearly A Ton Of Illegal Fireworks Seized

Posted: 7:39 am PDT July 1, 2009Updated: 6:35 pm PDT July 1, 2009

Two men have been arrested, nearly a ton of illegal fireworks and other firearms seized after a search of an Oakland home and a truck, police said.

An undercover operation targeting illegal firework operations brought Oakland police to a home on the 1400 block of 40th Av. near International Blvd. Tuesday night.

Police found nearly 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks in a truck and in the home’s attic. According to investigators, most of the fireworks were packaged and ready for sale. Among the items seized, police said, were bottle rockets, mortar shells and m1000 fireworks.

While fireworks are common in Oakland this time of year, it is illegal to possess or sell commercial grade fireworks.

Also seized during the raid, authorities said, were several weapons including two rifles, a TEC-9 assault pistol and a stolen .380 handgun.

“We called in the Alameda County Bomb Squad to safely remove the fireworks,” Oakland police spokesman Roland Holmgren said.

A father and son were taken into custody on a variety of charges, authorities said, but neighbors were quick to defend the men.

“People around here know what’s going on,” said David Ramirez. “On the Fourth of July, we all have parties. The whole block…They (the men arrested) are not bad people.”
