MODESTO, Calif. -- Business operators near a warehouse Scott Peterson uses for his fertilizer business say that Modesto investigators have asked them to recall anything unusual they saw in days surrounding the disappearance of his wife, Laci.
Corey Miguel, who works at a nearby auto shop, said police were particularly interested in a nearby dumpster."They asked if there were any Redimix bags in the dumpster," he said. They also talked with Tony Sexton, who works at a nearby sign company."They came in and asked if we'd seen Scott or this truck or his boat," Sexton said. "They also asked questions about Redimix concrete and if we'd see any Redimix in the dumpster."In a lengthy interview with KTVU's Ted Rowlands several weeks ago, Scott Peterson admitted that he often used concrete for projects to improve his house and in his business.
Meanwhile, Scott's sister Janey Peterson said on a national television show Wednesday night that she hoped Modesto police were not focusing too much on her brother. We all love Scott very much and support him 100 percent," she said. "We want everyone to understand that it really saddens us to see the focus and direction this (the investigation) has taken."She added that she hoped the investigation was not being influenced all the media attention focused on the case.Earlier in the day, police concluded a meticulous two-day search of the Peterson's Modesto home. They said they hoped the search would either implicate her husband or clear him.But after driving away with several boxes and a truck, Modesto police spokesman Doug Ridenour repeated that the husband is neither a suspect, nor has he been ruled out as one."We have not been able to eliminate Scott from the investigation," Ridenour said. "We'd like to and are hoping we are going to be able to do that at some point."
"The follow-up search came after police said they made unspecified new findings in the disappearance of Laci Peterson, the 27-year-old substitute teacher who was last seen Christmas Eve.Ridenour declined to say what investigators were seeking or seized from the house. Police returned a white pickup truck to Scott Peterson on Wednesday after combing it for evidence. In all, 95 items were removed from the home.Peterson, 30, was not at the house Wednesday, but he told MSNBC that he hoped the police were doing everything they could to find his wife, who was due to deliver their first baby this month."I'm missing my wife and my child," he said. "I can't drive. I can't sleep. Sometimes I feel I just can't do it, I feel like I'm in a dark corner and I just can't function."Peterson said he last saw his wife Christmas Eve when he left to go fishing. He reported her missing when he returned. Police searched the home two days later, but waited nearly two months to return.
