DALY CITY, Calif. -- A California Highway Patrol air operations unit rescued a paraglider pilot Friday evening after he crashed into a cliff and became trapped hundreds of feet above the Daly City coastline.

A helicopter rescue unit from the CHP Golden Gate Division responded to Mussel Rock Beach at around 7 p.m., where a paraglider pilot in his 20s had lost control of his aircraft and flown into the face of a coastal cliff, according to the CHP. The pilot was injured and suspended on an inaccessible 2-foot section of rock about 200 feet above the beach.

"Daly City Fire would have had to set up an extensive rope system to lift the man from the cliff," CHP Officer Schmidt said in a statement.

Instead, Schmidt was lowered 100 feet from a CHP helicopter to the victim's location, where he successfully secured the injured man into rescue equipment.

The victim was hoisted on to the CHP helicopter and then transferred to a medical unit from the Daly City Fire Department, according to the CHP.

Officials did not release any information regarding the victim's condition.
