Teen confesses to starting fire at Santa Cruz Mountains school

LOS GATOS, Calif. (KTVU) - Two schools in Los Gatos will re-open Tuesday morning, after a fire canceled classes Monday.

A teenager confessed to starting the fire.

According to Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies, the 17-year old boy said he went to Loma Prieta Elementary School late Sunday night to smoke marijuana with his friends, but no one had any.

They decided to stay, and set a cardboard box on fire to keep warm.

Before leaving, the teenager dumped smoldering ashes in a trash can.

The boy was not formally arrested, but the case will be sent to the district attorney's office for possible charges.
