BONNY DOON, Calif. -- Cal Fire lifted its mandatory evacuation order in the Bonny Doon area Sunday afternoon, allowing some of the 2,400 displaced residents to return to their homes. As of 3 p.m., Bonny Doon residents with proper identification are allowed back into the area, according to Cal Fire. Nearly 2,400 people have been evacuated since Wednesday night, when crews began battling the fire that is now burning about 6,850 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The nearby Swanton community is still under evacuation orders, according to Cal Fire. The agency did not have immediate numbers on how many residents are still displaced from their homes. Authorities will be stationed at three major intersections in the Bonny Doon area, checking residents' identification. Those intersections are: Alba Road and Empire Grade; Empire Grade and Ice Cream Grade; and Bonny Doon and Pine Flat roads. The Lockheed Fire, which has cost $6.2 million to fight was 65 percent contained as of Sunday night. Cal Fire officials say weather, steep terrain and limited access to the fire's perimeter continue to pose a challenge. A state of emergency was declared in Santa Cruz County on Friday. The blaze has damaged two outbuildings, but no homes have burned, according to Cal Fire.
