OAKLAND, Calif. -- Two California State University, East Bay, students died in an apparent murder-suicide in Oakland, one of two domestic violence incidents that claimed three lives Thursday morning.

Police responded to the 8300 block of International Boulevard at about 6:30 a.m. after the department's ShotSpotter system detected gunfire there.

They found a 19-year-old woman shot to death inside a parked car and a 23-year-old man in a nearby home, also dead of a gunshot wound, police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason said.

Thomason this afternoon identified the man as Eric Conrad Hicks Jr., of Oakland. Police have not yet released the victim's name. Investigators believe Hicks shot the victim then turned the gun on himself, Thomason said.

Cal State East Bay spokeswoman Monique Beeler said Hicks and the victim had lived on campus in the Pioneer Heights student housing complex, described on the school's Web site as furnished apartments and suites that offer panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay.

Both were enrolled at the school but Hicks had moved off campus, Beeler said.

"We're so saddened by this terrible loss," Beeler said.

She said counselors and psychologists are available on campus to help students cope with the news.

"Our campus is very concerned about providing support for our students," she said.

Police did not disclose the relationship between Hicks and the victim.

In a separate incident Thursday morning, someone called police at 5:15 a.m. to report that a woman was injured inside a home in the 4500 block of Penniman Avenue.

Officers arrived to find the woman bleeding from what appeared to be stab wounds, Thomason said. She was taken to a hospital and died of her injuries. Police tonight identified her as 51-year-old Aisha Ali, of Oakland.

Shortly after the stabbing was reported, the victim's husband, 55-year-old Ahmed Ali turned himself in for the murder, Thomason said.

Len Montalvo, an officer with the private security company Intervention Agency, said Ahmed Ali flagged him down and surrendered.

Montalvo had just worked overnight and was driving near Courtland and Virginia avenues in his patrol car, which is marked with his company's logo, when Ali allegedly walked toward the car with his hands in the air.

"He put his hands up, like 'I'm giving up,'" Montalvo said.

Montalvo said Ali told him, "I just killed my wife."

He allegedly had some blood on his shirt and pants, and Montalvo placed handcuffs on him and detained him until police arrived to arrest him.

Montalvo said Ali seemed dazed, mumbling to himself and walking in circles.
