Stabbing Death Rocks SF's Excelsior District

Posted: 10:49 pm PDT October 13, 2009Updated: 11:50 pm PDT October 13, 2009

A San Francisco family is looking for answers to the seemingly random stabbing death of a 49-year-old man outside his home in the Excelsior district Monday night.

San Francisco Police have yet to make any arrests in the killing of Eric Buschman.

The family is filled with grief. Richard Buschman said Eric was a wonderful son.

Investigators said Eric Buschman had returned home from a camping trip about 8 p.m. Monday night. They said he was approached by a twenty-something Latino, described as five foot four and chubby. The stranger talked to Buschman as he unloaded his car and then stabbed him before fleeing the scene on foot.

"It concerns me a lot because we're all in danger and this person hasn't been caught yet," said Excelsior resident Raoul Silvestre.

Residents said the incident has shaken their already fragile sense of security.

Last year there were eight homicides in the space of four months in the area. Two men were shot to death at the intersection of Athens Street and Excelsior Avenue, the same intersection where Buschman was stabbed.

"I don't know if this is connected to any other criminal activity," said Sgt. Lyn Tamioka of the San Francisco Police Department.

Police said this is the first homicide in the neighborhood this year, adding the area is part of a police pilot program to prevent violent crimes.

"It is a residential neighborhood where people look out for each other," said Tamioka.

Buschman's wife, daughter, father and eight brothers and sisters are all hoping that someone will offer some information in the case.

"I want someone to come forward who saw what happened," said Buschman's sister, Gretchen Trappin. "We just want to know why. I think why all just want to know why."

San Francisco Police said people living in the area may feel comforted by the increased police presence in the neighborhood, but residents say they'll feel better when police have a suspect in custody.
