SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- It was supposed to take another 10 days before Alameda County could begin giving children and vulnerable adults their H1N1 vaccines, but a local company has suddenly stepped forward with money and a lot of community spirit to get those vaccines administered right away.A San Leandro company called Energy Recover Inc. came forward and offered to pay for nurses to give shots to children and pregnant women now. The company's marketing director said Energy Recovery gives back to the community each year.Company heads thought that the best way to do that this year was to help people deal with the H1N1 outbreak. The local school district and the Davis Street Family resource center took advantage. Workers at the Davis Street Center said they were ready to administer a couple of hundred shots this afternoon, but there were only a few clients because there hasn't been a lot of publicity. One woman who did take advantage is almost nine months pregnant and works with infants and mother. She said she wasn't sure if she could get the vaccine or not, but didn't want to expose her unborn child to anything dangerous.San Leandro Unified School District superintendent Christine Lim said she knows it's important for the district to get a jump on vaccinating students."When you hear of reports of kids actually dying, yeah, that was pretty scary," Lin said. "It was really important for us to be on top of communications and communicating with the parent community."San Leandro city leaders are very aware that without inoculations, the H1N1 virus has the potential to affect not just dozens, but thousands of children."That's been my concern: making certain, if I could, that each and every youngster in San Leandro will be innoculated so we won't face that situation," said San Leandro Mayor Tony Santos. "I wouldn't know where to go if it were to occur."The plan right now is to immunize 2,500 children in San Leandro in the next week. The county expects to get more vaccine in November and December.
