San Jose Tire Fire Causes Health Concerns

Posted: 6:44 am PST November 3, 2009

A big fire at a San Jose tire shop is still causing some health concerns Tuesday morning.

It started shortly after 10 pm Monday night at Calderon Tires on South First and Union streets, not far from Intersate 280. The fire quickly grew to three-alarms.

Firefighters were concerned about the possible danger from the toxic smoke, coming from the burning tires so overnight, they issued a "shelter in place" order and evacuated three homes.

Crews were still testing the air Tuesday, to make sure the area is safe and so far there are no reports of any injuries.
