SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- A 7-year-old boy riding in the cargo area of a sport utility vehicle was killed in a crash on westbound Interstate Highway 580 in San Leandro Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The solo-vehicle crash was reported shortly after 3:50 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway near the Benedict Drive off-ramp. Preliminary reports indicate a rear tire of the Ford Explorer blew out and the female driver lost control of the vehicle, the CHP said. The Explorer overturned and landed on its right side. The 7-year-old boy was partially ejected and trapped underneath the vehicle, according to the CHP. He was taken to Children's Hospital Oakland, where he was pronounced dead. The CHP said the victim was with a 14-year-old boy in a cargo area of the Explorer where there are no seatbelts. In addition to the 7-year-old boy, there were six other passengers in the vehicle, which seats five, according to the CHP. The other six passengers were taken to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley to be treated for minor injuries, according to the CHP. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision.
