HILLSBOROUGH, Calif. -- Police in Hillsborough are warning of three scams that appear to be targeting elderly residents. In one scam, police say residents are receiving telephone calls from an individual claiming to be their child or grandchild. The caller claims to be in trouble, sometimes mentioning a car accident, and then usually asks for between $3,000 to $5,000 to be wired to them in Canada or Mexico.Another recently reported phone scam tells residents they have won the lottery or a sweepstakes and asks for a wire transfer, usually to Jamaica, for tax or processing purposes, police said. The third scam involves elderly victims who have been approached in a parking lot or at home by two men claiming the victim's vehicle collided with their vehicle and asking for money for repairs. Residents are asked to report this behavior immediately to police.
