Scott Peterson Gets High Profile Legal Help

All indications Wednesday were that famed Los Angeles defense attorney Mark Geragos, who has represented the likes of Winona Ryder and Rep. Gary Condit, will soon take over as lead counsel for Scott Peterson, who is accused of killing his wife, Laci, and unborn son, Connor.

Geragos, who has spoken often about the case as a legal expert on Larry King Live among other shows, was in Modesto on Tuesday and met with Peterson's parents and the public defenders that have been assigned to represent the Modesto man.

KTVU could not confirm a report that he had also met with Peterson, himself. However, a bail hearing for Peterson scheduled for next week was rescheduled by the court clerk to Friday and could indicate a change in attorneys.

The public defenders, meanwhile, continued to go through the more than 1,000 pages of evidence turned over to them by the district attorney's office. Prosecutors have said they have prepared 5,000 pages of documents so far in the case.

On Tuesday, Peterson's parents made one of their weekly visits to the jail to talk with Scott. Emerging to a crush of reporters, Lee Peterson -- Scott's father -- once again proclaimed his son's innocence.

"I can tell you our son is innocent and we are here to support him," Lee Peterson said.

The Petersons also reportedly took a ride by Scott and Laci's Modesto home where a makeshift memorial to the slain woman and her unborn son has filled the yard with flowers, cards, signs and stuffed animals.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department also confirmed that Scott Peterson has the right to attend a memorial service for his wife and child scheduled for Sunday in Modesto. But authorities said he had yet to ask for permission.

Laci Peterson had been missing since Christmas Eve until her badly decomposed body washed up on shore near Point Richmond on April 14. The 27-year-old Peterson was eight months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.

The day before Peterson's body was found, the fetus of her unborn son Conner washed up on shore about a mile north.

On April 18 police arrested Peterson's husband Scott in San Diego for the murders just before being alerted that the bodies of Peterson and her unborn son had been positively identified through DNA analysis.

Modesto District Attorney Jim Brazelton has said he will likely seek the death penalty for Scott Peterson.
