Garden Becomes Memorial For Teen Shot On Way To Prom

Homicide investigators are actively working this case trying to track down who is responsible for fatally shooting 16-year-old Phillip Wright as he answered a knock at his door.

On Saturday, the teen’s loved ones honored at a community garden in east Oakland.

One by one, volunteers shoveled, making a special place for tree they intended to memorialize a young man that made such an impact.

Wright volunteered at the garden since he was 8 years old, planting trees and helping create the garden.

“He was here every day that he could, afterschool he showed up with a smile on his face a good sense of humor, good work ethic,” said Frank Rose of the East Oakland Boxing Association, where Wright volunteered.

A ceremony in the garden of East Oakland's Boxing Association was filled with Wright's friends. They are still coming to grips that he is gone.

Phillip was shot and killed while answering his door Thursday night. Police believe it is a case of mistaken identity.

He lived with his grandparents and brothers, who say Phillip was not a troublemaker.

“He likes planting gardens, working on cars, he was curious, very curious but he was quiet, never messed with nobody,” said Lee Oliver, Wright's Grandfather. “He went to work every day after school he get his money, he gives grandma and grandpa 50 dollars each.”

The bullet holes in the house are a reminder to his family of what happened here. They're not sleeping in the house because they are afraid.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area and are combing the area for information.

, Oakland Police “I put people on special assignment [Saturday] specifically to go out in the field to gather information and gather witnesses,” said Oakland Police Lt. Drennon Lindsey. “And if we locate them, then we take it back to homicide so we can follow up on that information.”

His friends are hanging onto the memories they have of Wright, who they describe as happy and kind.

“We were nerds we did stuff that tried to test our intelligence, solving Rubik’s cubes and doing word searches and puzzles and stuff like that,” said Terry Moland, Phillip's Friend

Now a constant reminder of Wright lives in the community garden -- a Japanese maple tree planted in his honor. Also a picture, hung in the highest part of the garden, allows Wright to watch over what he worked so hard to create.

“That makes me feel real good, real good. I thank everyone who is trying to help us find the people,” said Oliver. “Keep Phillip in mind and in prayer.”

The Khadafy Foundation pledged to assist Oliver with providing Wright a burial. To help with the burial, go to www.khadafyfoundation.org.
