Berkeley Couple Wins Tech Museum's Star Trek Wedding Contest

A Berkeley couple who bonded over a mutual love of Star Trek will re-tie the knot in costume aboard the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise at The Tech Museum in San Jose.

Kyle Sessions and Nancy Kerr beat 13 other contestants around the country to win the Tech Museum's first Ultimate Star Trek Wedding online contest.

As part of their prize, the pair will be given access to the re-created set of the U.S.S. Enterprise bridge inside the Star Trek exhibition at the museum during the ceremony and a private museum room for a reception.

They will also receive a two-night stay at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, and a two-tier, Star Trek-themed wedding cake from Bijan Bakery & Cafi in San Jose.

The couple entered the contest by submitting a photo along with a statement about why they should be picked to renew their vows on the bridge. Sessions and Kerr wrote about meeting in their freshman year of college where they quickly bonded over their love of Star Trek and science fiction. They married on Oct. 2, 2004.

Their statement entry received 522 of the 2,189 votes cast on the museum's Facebook page, the highest number of votes. The excited couple was notified of their win Thursday.

"This the sort of thing that we've wanted to do for a while," Sessions said in a statement. "We've seen all the movies and television series starting with the Next Generation, then Deep Space Nine and Voyager."

The couple is in the process of finalizing a date for their reception. Museum spokesman Roqua Montez said the reception will take place sometime before the exhibition closes in April.

"I will be there front and center," Montez said.
