CONCORD, Calif. -- The plot of a KTVU story about an East Bay senior high school class getting ripped off by an event planner thickened Tuesday as more victims stepped forward to accuse the woman in question of financial improprieties.School district officials said they may be seeking criminal charges against the woman who disappeared with some $6,500 in funds raised by Ygnacio Valley High School seniors for their prom. The Monday night broadcast of the high school students’ sad story spurred others to get in touch with KTVU with their own claims of being taken for a ride by event planner Cassandra Grill. Some said they're owed tens of thousands of dollars. At Tuesday night's Mount Diablo Unified School District meeting, the general counsel for the district said he contacted the Contra Costa County District Attorney's office to find out about pressing criminal charges against grill. He said others had stepped forward to offer help.“We've had a strong outpouring of public support,” said attorney Gregory Rolen. “We've had private investigators offering their services. We've had other school districts call us saying they've had similar experiences.”Another person who claimed to have had an experience with grill was Alicia Kite, who manages James Standfield Catering in South San Francisco. She showed us Facebook pictures of grill who is now believed to be running a public relations business in Los Angeles.Kite said she began having trouble collecting payments from Grill in 2008.“Everything bounced. All the checks bounced,” said Kite. “[We] couldn't get a hold of her. We're out $75,000.”Incredibly, just two minutes before KTVU spoke with Kite, she received the first message from Grill she said she's had in months. The text said in part "First, let me give you another apology for what happened"The message went on to blame schools for not paying her and ended saying "By the end of next week I can give you a concrete date that I can pay you in full, which will be very soon."“I think the news story got to her,” said Kite. “I don't think I'll ever see my money. i won't hold my breath on this one.”Toby Proescher, who works with the planning company Events to the ‘T’, also said he's had trouble getting payments from Grill. He claimed her actions have hurt legitimate event planners across the bay area. “I've been through two cell phone batteries today,” said Proescher. “I had about 30 people call wondering if I was good and if I knew her.”And while event planners, caterers and students try to move on, Alicia Kite fumed over at the Facebook pictures of grill and her alleged trail of unpaid bills and teen angst.“You see pictures of what's she's doing,” said Kite. “We're waiting for our money and all she has are excuses.”Both event planners KTVU spoke with Tuesday night said they are willing to put on the Ygnaicio Valley High School prom for no additional cost to the school.Others are also coming forward with donations to help the students. In the meantime, Mount Diablo school district officials said they have sent a letter to grill demanding a refund. The school has yet to hear back.
