SF City Workers Reportedly Reach Deal To Postpone Layoffs

An agreement was reportedly reached early Monday evening to put off Mayor Gavin Newsom's plan to lay off as many as 17,000 city workers.

Union officials said the mayor's office has agreed to a one week moratorium while the city and the unions negotiate alternatives.

The mayor is trying to close a $500 million budget gap. City workers may have to agree to concessions such as pay cuts or furlough days in order to save those jobs.

The mayor’s plan proposed laying off the workers then rehiring most with reduced hours.
