SAN FRANCISCO -- A pedestrian who was fatally struck by a pickup truck while he was standing on a San Francisco Municipal Railways platform has been identified by the medical examiner's office Saturday as 53-year-old George Schaeffer.

San Francisco police arrested a 36-year-old Central California man on suspicion of driving under the influence and manslaughter Friday morning after he allegedly struck Schaeffer.

The crash took place at about 5 a.m. at Fourth and King streets, near the Caltrain station.

According to police spokesman Sgt. Wilfred Williams, Dwain Davis, of Templeton, was driving a white pickup truck southbound on Fourth Street that collided with a waste disposal truck, owned by the recycling company Recology, going eastbound on King Street.

Davis' pickup then lost control and struck Schaeffer, who had been standing on a Muni platform, according to Williams.

Schaeffer was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died. The waste disposal truck driver was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Davis, who was uninjured, was detained at the crash site and arrested later in the morning for driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter, according to Williams.

The crash, which impacted Muni service and vehicle traffic in the area for nearly four hours, remains under investigation.
