Man Gets 8 Years For Burning Down Murdered Woman's House

SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- A Sonoma County man was sentenced in Sonoma County Superior Court Friday to eight years in prison for his role in a 2006 arson and murder near Sonoma.Steven King, 29, pleaded no contest to arson and being an accessory after the fact in return for the eight-year prison term.His co-defendant, John Wayne, of Sonoma, was convicted this month of the murder of 52-year-old April Denton, robbery, burglary and arson of her rural Santa Rosa home on Jan. 22, 2006.King testified against Wayne at his trial.The Sonoma County District Attorney's Office said both men went to Denton's home to get prescription pain pills she was selling to supplement her income.King drove to his home near San Pablo Bay but Wayne went inside Denton's home, stole cash and pills and shot Denton in the neck, the district attorney's office said.Wayne then called King to pick him up at Denton's house and both men then left to siphon gas into bottles and returned to Denton's home, the prosecution said.Wayne went inside and lit the house on fire, according to the prosecution, and King threw the gun Wayne used into San Pablo Bay.Wayne faces life in prison without parole when he is sentenced May 11 in Sonoma County Superior Court.
