Diablo Valley Rugby Match Ends With Shooting

A rugby match held at Diablo Valley College Saturday night ended in tragedy after one of the spectators was shot by an unknown suspect and hospitalized.

Witnesses called in the shooting around 8 p.m., during a rugby match between the Diablo Gaels Rugby Club and the San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club on the college's football field.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the incident started when an altercation broke out between two spectators on the field as the game concluded; one hit the other in the jaw, which prompted the injured man to shoot his attacker.

The shooter then ran off the field, prompting dozens of law enforcement agents to comb the college campus.

Authorities took the shooting victim to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where the shooting suspect later arrived for treatment for his broken jaw. Authorities arrested him after he was treated for his injuries.

According to a spokesperson for the college, the Diablo Gaels are not affiliated with the school and rent the field for its games.

Saturday's shooting came four days after two men were shot watching a women's rugby match in East Palo Alto. Two suspects in that shooting have been arrested.
