A Vacaville man was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing $1,200 in champagne from a grocery store last month, police reported Saturday.

An employee noticed several bottles of high-end champagne missing from Nugget Markets at 130 Browns Valley Parkway in late June.

"He thought to himself that summer is a time for celebrations, but didn't think that many bottles had been sold," police said in a news release.

The store reviewed surveillance video and saw a man selecting three tote bags and filling them with 14 bottles of champagne at 7:37 p.m. on June 25.

He then walked out of the store without paying, police said.

Officers shared the surveillance video with law enforcement in nearby counties, and a police officer in Elk Grove recognized the suspect as 23-year-old Michael Karr, who had been arrested the same day for stealing paint from a hobby shop.

Police matched surveillance video from both cases and arrested Karr for theft.

He was booked into Solano County jail with bail set at $35,000.
