Poll: Gonzalez Has Slight Lead In SF Mayoral Race
POSTED: 4:28 pm PST November 15,
2003
SAN FRANCISCO -- The results of a poll has found both the San
Francisco mayor's race and the County district attorney's race in a
statistical dead heat. According to the poll, Green Party mayoral candidate Matt Gonzalez
is in the lead with 49 percent of the vote to Democrat Gavin Newsom's 47
percent. The mayoral poll is based on responses from 524 registered voters
who described themselves as "certain to vote" in the Dec. 9 runoff election. In the general election on Nov. 4, Newsom received 41 percent of
the vote and Gonzalez received 20. The survey found that voters who chose
other candidates in that election now favor Gonzalez 2-to-1. Gonzalez spokesman Ross Mirkarimi said "We believe that this is a
manifestation of how hard this campaign is working. Voters like Matt
Gonzalez's vision and they are rejecting Supervisor Gavin Newsom's attacks
against Matt.'' John Shanley, a spokesman for the Newsom campaign also responded
to the results of the survey, saying "We've always anticipated it to be a
close race." Shanley also said he did not believe the results of the poll were
an accurate reflection of voter support for the candidates. "I've heard it
wasn't a poll of registered voters. Do I think those numbers are accurate?
Not really,'' Shanley said. The race for district attorney, in which both candidates are
Democrats, finds Kamala Harris ahead at 51 percent to incumbent Terence
Hallinan's 48 percent. A total of 486 voters, also self-described as "certain" to vote,
were polled for the district attorney results. Those who voted for other candidates on Nov. 4 now back Harris by
2-to-1, according to the poll. Representatives from the Harris and Hallinan campaigns were not
immediately available for comment. Survey USA conducted the poll over a period of three
days from Tuesday to Thursday this week. Poll officials say the survey has a 4.4 percent margin of error.
