9 hospitalized in crash involving wrong-way driver

- Nine people were hospitalized Saturday night after a collision involving a wrong-way driver in Brentwood.

The crash happened just after 8 p.m., near the Sandcreek Road on-ramp to Highway 4.

Investigators say a car that had been reported stolen slammed into a minivan carrying eight people, including two young children.

The crash shut down that area of Highway 4 for nearly two hours.

Batallion Chief Ross Macumber, with the East Contra Costa County Fire Department, says, "We had multiple trauma victims that went to trauma centers, two be helicopter and multiple patients by ground."

There were two people in the car. One managed to get out on his own. The other person had to be pulled out by firecrews.

Officials say seven people in the minivan were also hurt, with the most seriously injured suffering a broken leg.

The youngest child was airlifted to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland as a precaution because of the baby's age.
