Suisun Diesel Spill Larger Than Originally Reported

A diesel spill that sent thousands of gallons of the oily fuel into a Bay Area marsh was larger than previously reported, according to the company that owns the pipeline.

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners of Houston recently released a status report on the April 27 spill that upped the amount to 85,000 gallons from the originally reported 60,000 gallons.

The cleanup continues near Cordelia. The company is paying for the work but has not disclosed the price tag.

The rupture occurred in the company's pipeline running through the 55,000-acre Suisun Marsh, California's largest wetland and a haven for more than a million migrating and resident shorebirds and waterfowl. Levees and gates used to manage water flows kept the fuel from spreading into San Francisco Bay, wildlife experts said.

The pipeline carries diesel, jet fuel or gasoline from Bay Area refineries to Concord, Sacramento, Rocklin, Chico and Reno.

Cews have already cleaned 54,000 gallons of the spill.

"This is now a more accurate estimate of the amount spilled. The early figure was always said to be a rough estimate," said Jerry Engelhardt, a company spokesman.

Near the spill site, wildlife officials have posted shiny reflectors to scare away shorebirds and waterfowl that might try to land.

The California Department of Fish and Game had tallied about two dozen oiled animals to date. A beaver, three muskrats, a mole, three sandpipers and a plover were among the known deaths caused by the spill, according to the department.
