A 19-year-old Georgia man has been arrested in connection with the assault of an 80-year-old woman in her Menlo Park home Wednesday night, a police spokesman said.

Police report that the woman, who lives alone in the 900 block of Alice Lane, opened her door and was allegedly confronted by the suspect, Dangelo Langford, who was posing as a door-to-door magazine salesman.

Langford allegedly forced the woman back inside her home and assaulted her, around 8:30 p.m., Sgt. Mike Amaral said.

A neighbor heard the woman scream and pounded on her door. Langford answered the door and when he saw the neighbor, he fled and escaped on foot, Amaral said.

The woman was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, and is reported in stable condition this morning, Amaral said.

An investigation revealed that the suspect was possibly a solicitor who had been dropped off in the neighborhood by van, according to police.

Neighboring police agencies were notified and assisted in searching for the van and suspect.

Officers located a van and a man resembling the suspect around 11 p.m. at Waverly Street and Lytton Avenue in Palo Alto, police report.

Langford was arrested on an unrelated outstanding felony warrant for aggravated assault with a handgun, Amaral said, and brought to the Menlo Park Police Department for questioning in the case.

Langford is being charged with assault with intent to commit rape, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, resisting arrest, kidnapping, and false imprisonment, Amaral said. He said that it is unclear what weapons, beside Langford's hands, were used in the assault.

The police have not received any other reports of assaults or aggressive behavior from residents in the neighborhood where Langford was selling magazines, Amaral said.
