SAN FRANCISCO -- Six people have died on Bay Area highways over the Thanksgiving weekend, the California Highway Patrol reported Sunday. CHP Sgt. Wayne Ziese said that provisional total reflects fatal crashes from Wednesday night through 6 a.m. Sunday and compares to two deaths through the same time last year. It's also a corrected total, Ziese explained, as the CHP reported on Saturday that seven people had died in highway collisions. CHP officers in the Bay Area have arrested 228 people on suspicion of drunken driving, Ziese said. The total by the same time last year was about the same, with 226 arrests. Statewide, 48 deaths have been reported over the holiday weekend, compared to 31 by the same time last year, Ziese said. He said the statewide DUI arrest total is down slightly compared to the same period last year, with 1,430 arrests compared to the 1,515 in 2003. Final statistics should be released by Monday afternoon.
