NEWARK -- Police announced Thursday they have arrested a juvenile in connection with the homicide of Johnny Jaurigue, an 18-year-old who was gunned down in a drive-by shooting.
Lt. Jim Leal said the suspect was arrested late Wednesday night, but investigators were still unable to determine a motive. Police were also still investigating whether more suspects were involved in the shooting. The death has raised emotions in the neighborhood to the boiling point. A vigil for Jaurigue turned violent Wednesday evening. Leal said police were called to the scene after a fight broke out, but no one was arrested.Jaurigue was shot and killed Tuesday night just a few blocks from where he lived with his grandparents, according to Alameda County coroner's spokesman Dan Apperson.Family members including Jaurigues' grandfather reportedly ran to the scene moments after the incident, but were too late to help.Toni Angulo, the victim's aunt who lost her husband to street violence eight years ago, said that Jaurigues "didn't deserve this at all. He was a very good person with a big heart."The fact that Angulo lost her husband Johnny Angulo in a similar incident makes the shocking death that much more painful:"He was shot the same way Johnny was shot," she said. "So it's really hard on the family because it's bringing back a lot of memories."Newark Police said they had received reports that there were one to four suspects on foot involved in the shooting, while other witnesses claim the assailants were in a car. Police say don't know yet if the shooting was gang related. Anyone with information on Jaurigue's killing is urged to contact the Newark Police Department's silent witness line at (510) 793-1400, ext. 500.
