SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A man convicted of repeatedly raping a Santa Clara woman during a burglary last year was sentenced today to 490 years to life in state prison, according to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney James Gibbons-Shapiro. Carlos Aldama, 34, was convicted of 10 felony counts and one misdemeanor charge by a jury on Feb. 7. Gibbons-Shapiro said what transpired in the early morning hours of May 13 was a "callous and disgusting" series of events. Aldama forced his way into a home located near the intersection of San Tomas Expressway and Benton Street around 4 a.m. Disconnecting the phone line, Aldama proceeded to awaken the 45-year-old victim and repeatedly rape her over several hours. The victim was the caretaker of an 80-year-old woman who owned the house and was bedridden. Gibbons-Shapiro said at one point during the ordeal Aldama allowed the victim to care for the elderly woman, before ordering her to emerge from the woman's room where she was raped again. Aldama stole the elderly woman's purse before fleeing the scene. He was arrested a few days later during a routine traffic stop. Gibbons-Shapiro said Aldama was a passenger in the vehicle and was found to be under the influence and in possession of methamphetamine. He was also in possession of credit cards belonging to the elderly woman. Superior Court Judge David Cena handed down the sentence, which was dictated under the state's Three Strikes Law. "You have committed some of the most vile and evil acts that I have ever heard of," Cena said to Aldama during the sentencing. Aldama's previous felony offenses included a charge for making criminal threats and for the willful discharge of a firearm, according to Gibbons-Shapiro. During the trial, in which the victim testified, Aldama acted as though it was the victim's fault. "His testimony not only showed no remorse but he compounded the disgusting nature of the crimes by attempting to blame the victim for what he did to her," Gibbons-Shapiro said. It was also revealed that Aldama's birthday was on May 12, the day before the crimes occurred. Aldama's wife and infant child were apparently waiting at their home where they had planned a birthday party. Gibbons-Shapiro said Aldama never showed up, and instead proceeded to the Santa Clara home where the crimes were committed. At today's sentencing, the victim spoke about how difficult it has been for her to move on and get back to a normal life. Aldama did not make a statement. He was ordered to provide a blood and saliva sample that will be cross-referenced to the state's unsolved crime database.
