Bay Bridge Welders Sue Construction Company

OAKLAND -- Welders who worked on the new span of the Bay Bridge connecting Oakland and San Francisco have sued, claiming they are ill from exposure to toxins. The suit, filed last week in Alameda County Superior Court by 43 plaintiffs, names bridge contractor KFM Joint Venture and its component companies Kiewit Pacific, Flatiron Construction and Manson Construction as defendants, as well as makers of welding rods and ceramic fiber materials used in the project. The welders say they became ill from exposure to manganese fumes and other toxins. KFM spokesman Nathan Ballard declined comment Thursday. Workers have previously said that KFM ran a work site where they feared retaliation for reporting injuries or questioning safety practices.
