Sgt. Wayne Ziese reported that 574 drivers were arrested in the Bay Area for driving under the influence since the CHP began its maximum enforcement period on Friday. Last year there were 410 DUI arrests.

Five fatal crashes were reported over the weekend, equaling the amount of deaths during 2004's Memorial Day weekend, according to Ziese.

Jayeon Hong, 25, of San Jose, was killed Saturday morning when an allegedly drunken driver slammed his Ford F-350 into the car she was riding in which was disabled on the side of Interstate Highway 280 near Redwood City, the CHP reported. John Joseph Hardiman, 41, was arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

On Saturday night, Walter Orlando Hernandez, 22, was arrested after he allegedly crashed his car into a tree in Novato, killing his 14-year-old passenger. According to the CHP, Hernandez allegedly failed a field sobriety test.

Bradley Flint, 33, of Newport, Mich., was killed while riding his bicycle Saturday, the CHP reported. Flint, who was studying to become a priest, failed to negotiate a turn and plunged 75-feet off a cliff in Napa County.

Stephen McGuire, 34, was killed Monday night after he lost control of his vehicle as he approached slowing traffic on U.S. Highway 101 in Menlo Park, according to the CHP. A drunken driver allegedly caused the heavy traffic by spinning out on the freeway 20 minutes prior to the fatal crash.

An elderly woman was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash on U.S. Highway 101 in Sunnyvale Monday night, the CHP reported. The Santa Clara County Coroner has not yet released her identity pending notification of next of kin.

During the enforcement period, all available CHP officers were deployed to patrol freeways and highways under their jurisdictions, Ziese reported.
