Bush's Popularity Falls To New Low In California

SACRAMENTO -- Only 34 percent of Californians approve of the job President Bush is doing -- his lowest rating in the state since he took office in January 2001, according to a new statewide poll. An even smaller group -- 28 percent -- support the president's handling of the war in Iraq, and 36 percent approve of his handling of the economy, according to a Field Poll released Friday. The poll found that 57 percent of those surveyed said they believe the country is on the wrong track. Opinions of Bush differed sharply between Democrats and Republicans. Eighty-five percent of Democrats said they disapprove of Bush, while 71 percent of Republicans said they have a favorable view of him. Fifty-nine percent of people not affiliated with either major party said they disapprove of the president. The findings contrast sharply with Bush's popularity in California after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, when 74 percent said they approved of the president's performance. A Field Poll released in February found that 41 percent of those surveyed in California gave the president a favorable rating. Bush lost California by wide margins to Democratic candidates John Kerry and Al Gore in the 2004 and 2000 presidential campaigns. The survey, conducted over a seven-day period ending June 19, was drawn from interviews with 491 adults. It has a sampling error of 4.5 percentage points.
