REDWOOD CITY -- A New Mexico couple that allegedly left their small daughter on a San Mateo sidewalk pleaded not guilty Tuesday to child endangerment. Elias Dominguez, 41, and Felicia Dominguez, 40, were out of custody on bail when they appeared before Superior Court Judge Mark Forcum. The parents of eight were visiting the Bay Area for a church conference, when the June 13 incident occurred, according to the San Mateo County district attorney's office. On that morning, the couple returned to a friend's house about 2:30 a.m. About 5:15 a.m., a neighbor saw the couple's SUV parked on the street with the engine running, and their daughter on the sidewalk two feet from the tailpipe, according to the prosecution. The child, approximately 3 years old, was unresponsive and in a pool of urine when found but was revived and has recovered. The couple has eight children up to 17 years old. During police interviews, the couple essentially told police that they mistakenly forgot the child, and that these kinds of things happen when you have eight kids, according to prosecutor Chris Feasel. Elias Dominguez's defense attorney William Johnston said that the couple left the child in the SUV and she climbed to the sidewalk on her own. The Dominguez couple will return to court for a pretrial conference on Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. The pair is scheduled for a jury trial to start on Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
