Posted: 11:20 am PDT July 17, 2005Updated: 11:22 am PDT July 17, 2005

A man apparently drowned yesterday after he jumped into Lake Berryessa to save his 3-year-old grandson, the Napa County Sheriff's Department reported.

Union City resident Rolando Abaya, 58, and a woman jumped into the water at Spanish Flat Resort around 1:49 p.m. to rescue the toddler.

Witnesses reported that they saw all three people under the water and that they were unresponsive, the sheriff's department reported.

Bystanders pulled all three victims from the water and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which revived the boy and woman.

Attempts by bystanders and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to revive Abaya were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Helicopters brought the boy and woman to a hospital. Their condition was not immediately available. An autopsy will be performed on Abaya on Monday, the sheriff's department reported.
