SF Supervisors Narrowly Approve Home Depot Project

Posted: 4:06 pm PST November 8, 2005

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Tuesday in a 6-to-5 vote approved the controversial construction of a Home Depot store along Bayshore Blvd.

It took five years of revisions before supervisors narrowly approved the 107,400-square-foot to be constructed at 491 Bayshore Blvd.

The proposal of the store, which will be built near U.S. Highway 101 in the city's Bayview neighborhood, had solid support from supervisors Fiona Ma, Sean Elsbernd, Bevan Dufty, and Michela Alioto-Pier, but lacked the crucial sixth vote.

Although Home Depot agreed to downsize its plans, supervisors Tom Ammiano, Gerardo Sandoval, Chris Daly, Jake McGoldrick, and Ross Mirkarimi have voted consistently to reject the environmental impact report and send the project back to the city's planning commission.

Board President Aaron Peskin, who was the crucial swing-vote in the debate and supported the continuance last week, finally caved at today's meeting.

He had expressed concern with Home Depot's promises of jobs and other guarantees that the city hasn't received in writing, according to Peskin's aide, David Owen.

Supervisor Maxwell, the primary supporter of the project, expressed satisfaction in the vote, and her aide Greg Asay said, "I think walking in everyone knew it was a done deal."

Other supervisors were not as pleased with the outcome.

Supervisor Daly, an opponent of the project from day one, was concerned about the store's impact on the local economy.

"There are some small businesses that are going to be affected," he said.

Originally a two-story store, the Home Depot will be one story and the parking garage was reduced from three stories tall to two.

The store is expected to be completed and open in late 2007 or early 2008.
