SAN FRANCISCO -- A man who died early Friday morning after he was shot in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood apparently was wearing a bulletproof vest, according to police. The victim was identified by the San Francisco medical examiner's office as Remy Phillips, 25, of San Francisco. Phillips was standing on the corner of Taylor and Turk Streets, said San Francisco police Officer Maria Oropeza, when another man shot him several times. Phillips was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he died of his wounds a short time later. Phillips is reported to have been wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting, Oropeza said, but Inspector Herman Jones of the homicide detail could not confirm that report. Authorities are not saying where on his body Phillips was shot. Jones said investigators found no sign of a struggle, which would indicate the suspect and victim knew each other.
