Emotions Simmer After Board Targets Schools For Closure

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education voted Thursday night to close three schools, merge six schools, and relocate four schools, according to school district spokeswoman Lorna Ho.

The number of closures, mergers, and relocations is less than the 22 to 26 closures and mergers that were under consideration by the school board earlier in the week. The vote was delayed a week after hundreds of parents and teachers turned out at last Thursday's school board meeting to protest the potential closures.

Cabrillo Elementary School, Enola D. Maxwell Middle School, and Luther Burbank Middle School will be closed, Ho said.

Six schools will be merged into three schools. John Swett Alternative Elementary School will merge with John Muir Elementary School; the Japanese Bilingual-Bicultural Program-West (JBBP) will merge with Rosa Parks Elementary School; and Aim High Academy will merge with Luther Burbank Middle School, according to Ho.

And four high schools will be relocated. The International Studies Academy will move to the Enola D. Maxwell Middle School site; Downtown High School will move to the International Studies Academy site; the Center for Independent Study will move to the JBBP West site; and Newcomer High School will move to the Edison Charter School site, Ho said.

School district officials estimate that the school closures will save the school district approximately $2.4 million, Ho said.

The school district also expects to make approximately $4 million in revenue by renting out school buildings that have been closed, Ho said. Projected budget deficits have prompted the move to close schools within the district.

Ho estimated that approximately 400 people attended the school board meeting, which lasted for more than four hours.

Ho declined to comment on the school board's reasoning regarding which schools were closed and the number of schools that were closed.
