SAN FRANCISCO -- Police arrested a 60-year-old man Wednesday after a high-speed chase through city streets and onto U.S. Highway 101 that left one officer injured and a patrol car damaged. Sgt. Neville Gittens said the chase began around 10:35 a.m. when a hit-and-run victim flagged down an officer near the Bayview station. The officer put out arrest information on the suspect's vehicle and shortly afterward another officer attempted to make an arrest at Third Street and Underwood Avenue. But the suspect fled in his 2006 Honda Ridgeline pickup truck, and he soon became boxed in by traffic, Gittens said. He then drove his vehicle onto the sidewalk to go around vehicles stopped at a light, striking an officer on foot in the walkway. The truck hit her arm and she suffered an injury as a result, Gittens said. The officer was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment. The man, later identified as Manuel E. Antonio, 60, kept driving and eventually made it to an onramp to the highway where he tried to make a sharp turn and failed, Gittens said. An officer stopped his patrol car behind the truck, but Antonio allegedly escaped again by backing into the squad car and driving onto U.S. Highway 101 where the chase continued. Antonio struck the center divider and damaged both left tires of his truck, but he kept driving south on the highway, Gittens said. The chase eventually ended in the Brisbane area. Police arrested Antonio on suspicion of two counts of assault on a police officer, felony evasion and felony hit and run.
