Latest SF Shooting; Tourists Shot At Drive-Thru

Posted: 8:24 am PDT August 17, 2006

A couple visiting San Francisco were shot as they waited at a Burger King drive-thru window in the Bayview district late Wednesday in what authorities say was a case of mistaken identity.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the shooting was reported at 10:35 p.m. at a Burger King near the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Faith Street.

A man and woman were both shot once, according to the Police Department, and then drove themselves to the hospital for treatment. Both victims were in stable condition at the hospital.

Bayview police say the Burger King's surveillance video camera was not working at the time. They do not have any suspects in custody.

The shooting came less than 24 hours after San Francisco recorded its 56th homicide -- the fatal shooting of Johnny Jackson, 38. Jackson and an unidentified woman were sitting in a parked car on Turk Street near Jefferson Square and the Plaza East housing development when each was shot in the head, police said.

The unidentified woman was taken to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition, officials said. At the Thomas shooting scene, San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi was critical of the response to the rising crime level in the city.

"The death toll is mounting once again," he said. "These spikes in gun violence seem to be alternating between the Bayview, the southern section of the city and the Fillmore and Western Addition," the supervisor said.

"There needs to be some arrests and prosecutions," Mirkarimi added. "We need to send a stronger message to the community that you can't commit murder and get away with it."

The mayor's office announced Wednesday it would expand the city's surveillance camera program.

David Onek, deputy director for the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the city would press the San Francisco Housing Authority to install a camera near the Plaza East development.
