An early Saturday morning high-speed chase in the streets of Menlo Park ended on an Atherton street corner with the driver being shot by pursuing police officers.

According to CHP Officer Aaron Quistad, the chase began shortly after 1 a.m. in Menlo Park when a vehicle was reported traveling in the wrong direction on Coleman Avenue.

The pursuit continued on several city streets, ending just minutes later at the intersection of Oak Grove Avenue and Greenoaks Drive in Atherton after shots were reported fired, according to the CHP and police.

Atherton police officers responded at 1:10 a.m. to the scene, Lt. Glenn Nielsen reported.

An ambulance took the driver of the vehicle to Stanford Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. Nielsen reported the unidentified victim is recovering from surgery.

The CHP officer was not injured in the pursuit or shooting.

The CHP and the San Mateo County District Attorney's office are cooperating with Atherton police in their investigation of the incident.
