Guilty Plea In Marin Paralyzed Bicyclist Accident

Posted: 4:07 pm PDT September 11, 2006

Fairfax resident Christopher Brown pleaded guilty in Marin County Superior Court Monday afternoon to charges he left the scene of a crash that left a bicyclist paralyzed in July.

Deputy District Attorney Chuck Cacciatore said the court indicated it would impose no state prison time but a maximum one-year county jail term. He said the felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident carries a four-year prison term.

Brown's attorney Judd Iversen said he will argue for probation at the Oct. 30 sentencing.

Brown's preliminary hearing was scheduled for this afternoon. He was also arrested for driving with a suspended license and without insurance.

Physician and competitive bicycle racer Bradley Frazee, 43, suffered spinal cord injuries when he was run over by Brown's Range Rover on Shoreline Highway at W. California Avenue in Mill Valley on July 11.

The California Highway Patrol reported Frazee veered into the westbound lane and collided with the westbound Range Rover. Brown, 40, was not at fault for the accident but left the scene, the CHP said.

The Range Rover was found in Bolinas and fabric from Frazee's helmet strap and clothing were found on the under-carriage of the Range Rover, the CHP said.

Iversen said Brown pulled to the side of the road and got out of his vehicle but others at the scene told him to call for help. He said Brown could not find his cell phone and left the scene.

"He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He still has nightmares," Iversen said.

Cacciatore said Frazee remains paralyzed at the Kentfield Rehabilitation Occupational Medical Center.

Frazee was a member of the Team Taylor competitive cycling team and was an emergency room physician at Highland Hospital in Oakland at the time of the accident.
