Quick Response Tames 3-Alarm SF Apartment Fire

Fearing the howling winds that normally buffeted the Twin Peaks neighborhood, San Francisco fire officials quickly dispatched 130 firefighters early Sunday to battle a 3-alarm apartment house fire before it could expand spread to nearby buildings.

As many as 10 people were displaced by the three-alarm fire that ripped through an apartment in a 14-unit complex.

The fire was first reported at 3:53 a.m. and fire units arrived at the apartment building at Parkridge and Crestline drives around 4 a.m., according to San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Ken Smith.

Finding a second floor apartment in flames, a second alarm was called almost immediately, Smith said, and when a third floor apartment above began to become exposed to the fire, a third alarm was called.

The normally windy Twin Peaks area was calm, which helped firefighters control the fire by 4:33 a.m., according to Smith.

"They did a great job," Smith said, in "very tricky terrain," he added, referring to the mazelike system of streets in this hilly area that firefighters navigated as they attempted to gain speedy access to the fire.

Fire damage was limited to the two apartments, though some of the first floor apartments may have water damage, according to Smith.

Smith estimated that about six to 10 people from the two apartments were displaced.

One resident was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, Smith said, and no firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but did not appear to be suspicious at this time, Smith said.
