Memorial Day will be a solemn day of remembrance for many as events take place across the Bay Area in honor of those who died serving their country.

A 21-gun salute will resound across the Presidio at noon, part of an all-day event that begins at 9:30 a.m. at Pershing Square across from the Presidio Officers' Club.   The formal ceremony, at which Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom will speak, will take place at 11 a.m. at San Francisco National Cemetery at 1 Lincoln Boulevard in the Presidio.

Also at 9:30 a.m., the Saratoga Foothill Club plans to host its 90th annual Memorial Day observance and procession. The procession starts at the Memorial Arch in Blaney Plaza, which is on Saratoga Avenue in downtown Saratoga.

Walnut Creek's annual Memorial Day commemoration is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in the city's Civic Park, with opening remarks by Mayor Justin Wedel.

Carrie Pepper will deliver the keynote address. She wrote "Missing on Hill 700," about her brother, Marine PFC Tony Pepper, who disappeared during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam.

In San Jose, a Memorial Day event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., featuring the San Jose Metropolitan Band. The event will take place at Los Gatos Memorial Park at 2255 Los Gatos Almaden Road.
