Police say there was no merit to reports of an active shooter at a San Francisco office building that prompted the evacuation of hundreds of people.

San Francisco Police Department Sgt. Michael Andraychak says police went Monday to investigate a report of a suspicious person with "a stick or a knife" at a Potrero Hill office building. Building security ordered a shelter in place that prompted someone to call 911 to report a possible active shooter situation.

Andraychak told reporters there "appears to be no merit to any shots being fired or any active shooter."

A Sutter Health medical clinic that was among the offices evacuated said it was closed for lunch at the time of the incident, which began shortly after 12 p.m.

A man who works at 350 Rhode Island Street said said that 700 people were evacuated from his office building. The building employs many tech workers from the company Samsara. There is also a culinary institute and a medical facility that share the space.

Tanya Schevitz said she came out of Next Level Burger by Whole Foods about 1 p.m. to see people running up the street. She saw several police cars and fire trucks.  Paramedics were getting a gurney and IV prepared.
