Caltrans implodes final piers of old Bay Bridge

Caltrans crews have demolished the two final piers from the old east span of the Bay Bridge.

The blast went off just before 7:30 Saturday morning.

Demolition crews waited for the right conditions in the water, before setting off the blast. Caltrans says the explosives will not damage the bridge and have minimal impact on birds and marine life in the area.

Waiting for the implosion did cause a backup on the bridge, as cars were stopped on the east end as a precaution.

Caltrans started imploding the final 19 piers of the old Bay Bridge in September.  To find out more, click here
