Campbell porch pirate suspect busted

Sara Loretz stole a package from a front porch, according to Campbell police.

This is KTVU crime reporter Henry Lee's Rap Sheet blog for Dec. 2, 2016:

PORCH PIRATE SUSPECT NABBED: A woman was arrested Friday for allegedly stealing a package from the porch of a Campbell home, police said.

Sara Lisa Loretz, 27, of San Jose is accused of swiping a parcel from a home shortly after 4 p.m. Nov. 18. Video surveillance of the theft was released publicly, and Campbell police released tips regarding her identity.

After being arrested at her home, Loretz admitted to the theft "as well as other porch package thefts in the area," police said.

Investigators recovered stolen property, including baby clothes and a collector's edition magazine, police said.

Campbell police are asking victims of recent package thefts in the Campbell, Willow Glen, West San Jose and Los Gatos areas to check surveillance video to see if the suspect in their thefts matches Loretz's description.

Loretz was booked at Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and being under the influence of a controlled substance. The incident involving the package theft will be reviewed by prosecutors.

The arrest comes as Bay Area police agencies, including Campbell and Petaluma police, are unveiling "bait package" programs in which parcels outfitted with GPS trackers are delivered to businesses and homes. Unsuspecting thieves are then nabbed after police follow the trail straight to them.
