A man who was walking along the highway in Fremont was killed early Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

Officer Ted Montes said that officers got a call about a pedestrian on northbound Interstate Highway 880 south of Fremont Boulevard about 3:30 a.m. Witnesses described him as a white man in his 30s or 40s. It's unclear where he was walking exactly or why he was out on the highway.

He was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene, Montes said.

No drivers stayed behind at the scene. It's unclear if any knew that they hit the man.

The CHP reopened all lanes at 7 a.m., easing the backup, which was at least a mile back to Dixon Landing Road.
